Rocket City Marathon, Saturday December 11, 1999
Operators are needed to support the Rocket City Marathon. This race is sponsored by the Huntsville Track Club, and has been selected by the Running Journal readers as their favorite Southeastern Marathon. Report of 1999 Cotton Row Run Monday May 31, 1999 (Memorial Day)
The 1999 Cotton Row Run squished to a soggy finish early Monday morning, 31 May. HARC Hams again provided communications support to the event as they have for several years. Leigh Bartlow, WD4CPF began the coordination but had to turn it over to myself when his 45th Girard College reunion was set for the same date. With his guidance, and coordination with John Roberts, KB4VH, the race communications coordinator, a group of amateurs was recruited to support the race. This group consisted of Peggy, KE4EGB; Cricket, KE4VOJ; Rick, WB9UCA; Tim, KF4YTI; and Wally, K4YBT. Tim, N8DEU, and Bill, WA8INZ, tried to set up an APRS tracker but due to the short coordination interval we worked under were unable to confirm arrangements. Everyone's dedication to doing a good job in spite of the circumstances was obvious in their acceptance of the discomfort of the rainy and cool conditions. Just to give some idea of the conditions my speaker mike shorted out during the second heavy down pour as the lead runners neared the 5 mile point leaving me with an open transmitter. (That's why I couldn't hear you, Peggy.)
Again, my thanks to those amateurs who braved the steady rains to help track the runners' progress around the course. In addition I'd like to pass on the thanks of the race committee.
